Every ethnic music in America has its own, unique creation story. The capturing of the authentic mountain tunes of Ukraine starts with the fiddle maestro, Paul Humeniuk.
Humeniuk reached out to his ethnic enclave by providing an emotional, musical connection to the old-world. Many other fine musicians were inspired to record during the 1920s & 1930s.
Here are the lives these first-generation Americans had left behind - and the world they found in North America. The usual mixture is here - love, laughter, loss - all presented with a skill and panache that was, until recently, overlooked.
Well-known collector Chris King's archive has provided most of the material, and he himself has undertaken the transfers and the sleeve notes.
