Additional Information

Police Sergeant Lou Boldt heads a special task force within Seattle's Homicide bureau. His job: find and stop the Cross Killer, a twisted, perverse serial murderer who has eluded police for six months and paralyzed the city. But when a body washes up on the shore of Puget Sound, Boldt thinks the killer has finally made a mistake.

This body shows some of the work of the Cross Killer - but a job badly botched. Did this woman die while trying to escape? Did she knowingly jump in the water to preserve a clue? And is she now desperately trying to tell Boldt something? With the help of the alluring Daphne Matthews, a police psychologist, Boldt pieces together the complex puzzle - and the listener is taken along on a journey into the mind of a killer, and into the day-by-day nuts and bolts of police work, that is among the best in modern crime fiction. Undercurrents is a roller-coaster ride in the dark that will intrigue, startle, and satisfy.

I hadn't read anything by Ridley Pearson in a couple of years, and I couldn't tell you why, except maybe that I found enough books by Grippando and Connelly and Griffin to keep me busy. Well, he's now back on my radar. This is a really strong work of fiction! It's got big, huge chunks of juicy plot -- first, there's a serial killer, then there a copycat serial killer, then there's ..... OK, can't give away any more than that. Then there's Lou Boldt, seasoned Detective Sergeant, grizzled, experienced, who's bearing the brunt of the criticism of a recent case gone bad. He's not one to be hamstrung by departmental procedures if he's got a killer in his sights. And there are great characters at work here. Lou's marriage is on the rocks, and he has to work closely with the departments psychological officer, who of course is a real knockout, and then there's Bobbie, the young "skirt" who's assigned to his task force and ends up being bait for the serial killer. Ridley Pearson really knows how to craft a great mystery. This book is the first in his series featuring Seattle PD Homicide Detective Lou Boldt. Pearson has, in part, based his characters on real-life law enforcement officers. In this story, Boldt confronts his own emotional issues, like coming to grips with decisions he's regretted making, and facing the impact that his actions have on others.

While dealing with his own personal issues, Boldt must bring his full attention to the investigation of grisly murders perpetrated by a nearly perfect criminal. The closer he gets to unraveling the mystery, the less things add up, and Boldt is faced with making decisions that may result in the killer getting away completely, or in being acquitted due to poor police procedure. The true complexity of the case keeps unfolding throughout the book in a manner that makes the reader identify with Boldt's dilemma, and not want to put the book down!
This is my first book by Ridley Pearson. I loved it! Read Undercurrent in two days and didn't want to put it down. I thought the book was well written and researched and gave all the necessary information for this plot. I was in Seattle a few years ago and remember the places mentioned in the book specifically the park. In certain places the story was so intense and so creepy that I really was scared and had goosebumps when I read them. The author accomplished his job in bringing me the horror to life. I'm going to try and read them in order since I didn't realize there were so many books with Lou Boldt's character. This is a very good detective story. I do recommend reading won't be sorry.
