Additional Information

Why do we understand media the way we do? In their simplest forms, media are means of communication and instruments of human creativity. But on another level, media are powerful technologies that govern how we think and act in the world, and they can even take on a sinister character, with media conglomerates working in opposition to freedom of information. Dominic Boyer grapples with these complexities in Understanding Media, where he questions what our different ways of engaging media actually tell us about media, how we relate to information, and about ourselves.

Understanding Media explores, in a serious yet entertaining way, our common habits of thinking about the presence and significance of media in our lives. Offering analysis of the philosophical and social foundations of contemporary media theory as well as everyday strategies of knowing media, it addresses the advantages and limitations of different ways of understanding media. Finally, Boyer reflects on how we can know media better than we do.

This short book of 103 pages is packed full of insights into media, philosophy, and technology. The ideas are presented in a very accessible manner, and the reader who has finished the book will come away with a better understanding of the nature of media.

In the first part of the book, Boyer presents the triad of poetic, formal and medial forms of understanding. Poetic understanding accounts for the "bringing-forth" of human creation, a creative force or principle that realizes itself in the world. Formal understanding accounts for the fixed externalities confronting human beings, a fixed stable structure or set of forms which we encounter. Medial understanding accounts for "the domain of human interconnection and sociality and its modes of exchange and reproduction" (p. 27).

Boyer argues that all these ways of talking about media are complementary and all necessary if we want to understand media. Media are at once instruments that help us to achieve our... Read more
I found this book very helpful in thinking about the role of the medial in life and in historical processes. Its clear and concise. Boyer's argument that we must cultivate a multiple attention to the medial, poetic and formal is convincing. It is clear to me how it can be applied usefully in analyzing and discussing culture.
This is an easy reading book. It takes not more than two days two finish this smoothly flowing essay size book. It is written by an anthropologist but intended for anyone who has a little theoretical interest in understanding media. Prof. Boyer traces three philosophical approaches to media: formal, poetic and medial. The books consists of two parts; the first part reconsiders McLuhan's work and the second part complicates the rethinking with examples from case studies....
