The book (plot, writing, etc.) is what I expected. The quality of the paperback was poor.
This is Borges first collection of stories. It is clear that he is searching to define his distinctive voice. And yet that voice is in this collection and the unique way he combines his vast knowledge with his imaginative power of recreation his evidenced already in the opening tale 'The Dread Redeemer Lazarus Morell'. In the very first page he takes one event' a scheme for importing blacks , so that they might languish in the hellish workpits of Antillean gold mines and from what he ironically calls 'this odd philanthropic twist' imagines there has come endless things from W.C. Handy'sblues to the mythological dimensions of Abraham Linoln, the five hundred thousand dead of the Civil War and its three thousand three hundred millions spent on military pensions' etc. The fabulous conconting of strange realities from high life and low, from history and daily life give the sign of a remarkably unique writer. Borges first book of short stories is as good and entertaining as anything he wrote. It is probably not the first thing to read by him, though, simply because here he is still "testing" out his style. Do not misunderstand me. These stories have a style of its own, perfectly matching its kind and atmsphere. Only, it is not The Lybrary of Babel or The South...
The book is composed of seven caricaturesque and tragic stories of real but not very well known historical characters (all of them linked to some crime or other); six brief pieces written by Borges as if he were someone else, or taken from imaginary books; and one story (Man on a pink corner) that is considered his first "all by himself" short-story, a crime situated in the 1900's slums of Buenos Aires with a twisted end and unique in Borges' ouvre for his use of slang and street language. Fun to read.
