Unmanned Aircraft Systems delivers a much needed introduction to UAV System technology, taking an integrated approach that avoids compartmentalising the subject. Arranged in four sections, parts 1-3 examine the way in which various engineering disciplines affect the design, development and deployment of UAS. The fourth section assesses the future challenges and opportunities of UAS.
Technological innovation and increasingly diverse applications are two key drivers of the rapid expansion of UAS technology. The global defence budget for UAS procurement is expanding, and in the future the market for civilian UAVs is expected to outmatch that of the military. Agriculture, meteorology, conservation and border control are just a few of the diverse areas in which UAVs are making a significant impact; the author addresses all of these applications, looking at the roles and technology behind both fixed wing and rotorcraft UAVs.
Leading aeronautical consultant Reg Austin co-founded the Bristol International Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) conferences in 1979, which are now the longest-established UAS conferences worldwide. In addition, Austin has over 40 years' experience in the design and development of UAS. One of Austin's programmes, the "Sprite UAV System" has been deployed around the world and operated by day and night, in all weathers.

I find the title of this book to be very misleading. The description on the back of the book is also slightly misleading. I read the book expecting at least a generic and slightly technical explanation of UAV design, development, and deployment. I was disappointed to find that there was little to nothing regarding design of a UAV, development of that design, integration of hardware, tradeoffs in hardware and airframe design, and deployment (fielding) of the finished product.
My thought is that a book like this is more of a $30 book at most. If you are currently looking for what I was looking for, I would recommend Aircraft Performance and Design by John Anderson, and/or Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach by Doug Raymer. In fact, if you are interested in aircraft design it would be beneficial to check out AIAAs Education Series.
Well written and comprehensive text on the subject. This book is an excellent primer on the subject that will inform beginner's and experts alike. The depth and breadth of information presented ensures this book will be an excellent reference text to sit on your desk.
This book really covers the foundations of UAV design from the ground up and assumes no previous aeronautical knowledge making this a good book for beginners and experienced aircraft designers. All systems of the UAS are covered in depth as well as ground control, maintenance, launch and recovery. The book is well organized and the reader is not burdened with excessive mathematical formulae. Safety and reliability are also covered. The book uses extensive illustrations and charts. Payload design and navigation and communications design are covered extensively. An entire section on certification and testing is included and covers crucial information. finally, sections on deployment, operational trials, and operational roles are included. All in all, this book covers all aspects from design to testing to operational deployment, a coverage which is complete and is not seen in many other UAS books. Overall, I highly recommend this book as a first UAS book and also as a book for...
