PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE:
Remove your old ones with a shoestring (wrapping it around the old ones once and pull, they'll pop right off without breaking), and carefully squeeze them together using pliers (Use a feeler gage to support the post gap if you must squeeze it) and then, hold the new ones between your fingers in position, having set the knob axle either all the way open or all the way off for 10 or 0 and aimed just where you want the numbers, next, take a small rubber mallet, give it a good sharp tap. In fact, using a flat bladed screw driver blade to carefully expand the middle slot, you can actually adjust them to get the perfect fit, not too firm but not too loose.
