The K8055 interface board has 5 digital input channels and 8 digital output channels. In addition, there are two analogue inputs and two analogue outputs with 8 bit resolution. The number of inputs/outputs can be further expanded by connecting more (up to a maximum of four) cards to the PC's USB connectors. All communication routines are contained in a Dynamic Link Library (DLL). You may write custom Windows (98SE, 2000, Me, XP) applications in Delphi, Visual Basic, C++ Builder or any other 32-bit Windows application development tool that supports calls to a DLL.

I bought this kit on sale, not realizing until I opened it that it was a kit. I had a very fun time soldering all the parts onto the printed circuit board (PCB) and powering it up. It took me about five hours from unpacking to power-up. I took my time and carefully inventoried the parts prior to assembly. I tested the resistors and diodes before soldering as well. Once done, it powered up and functioned perfectly using all the functions available in the demo program.
The documentation is Spartan, but contains all the information needed to assemble the board. A beginner might have some issues figuring out what the manual is telling you to do, but not too much. The resistor chart and list showing the color bands to use was very helpful to make identification quick.
I would take the manual's advice and mark off the resistors as you go. You cover up the resistor number on the PCB as you go. You could refer to a diagram; but it's just easier. I didn't bother...
I bought a version of this board that comes pre-assembled (purchased elsewhere because not available pre-assembled on Amazon), and it is nothing short of awesome. I wrote a C++ program using the DLL to read/write to/from the board, and had it up and running in no time.
You do obviously have to understand programming jargon to use the DLL, and luckily for me, I'm comfortable with run-time linking using LoadLibrary() and GetProcAddress(), so it was a no-brainer... But there are also .NET ways of using the DLL that are even simpler. And the methods contained within the DLL are super straight-forward.
Along with easy-to-use input connectors, the board has pots for analog inputs, and push buttons for discrete inputs (with a bonus button-counter feature!). On the output side, along with easy-to-use connectors, there are also varying-brightness LEDs for the analog outs, and on/off LEDs for the discrete outs.
All in all, very nicely done!
Bought this from another site, for more cash, as I never thought to check Amazon. Anyway apart from that this is an excellent kit. Well laid out quality manufacturing and screen-printing, the manual while a bit sparse is clear and concise leaving little doubt as to component placement and polarity. Only issue I had was a dud LED which Velleman had provided an extra one of, only component they did that for, so either astonishing prescience by them or this is a particular problem with those LEDs. My board is slightly different form the one illustrated here and indeed from the one in my manual, there is a line of holes labelled SK9 which should have a sil header 5 pins long soldered to it. It appears to have something to do with the Digital I/O but I haven't looked too deeply at it yet. caused me a little confusion as I couldn't find a header for it in the bag. Apart from the dud LED this was a worked first time project, that doesn't happen too often and I think this can be put down to...
