I upgraded to this from a VeraLite. Yes, I had problems with transferring my battery powered devices and ended up having to simply remove and reconnect each of them. It's been rock solid since. Vera isn't as user friendly as the other products are. If you're the type of person who has to call someone to fix a computer or someone who doesn't know how to troubleshoot systematically, then this product isn't for you. Also, if you don't search forums or google before you ask for help, this probably isn't for you. In order to be successful in the z-wave community, you really should have some knowledge of networks, computers(Linux), SSH, wireless protocols, etc. It's all interwoven into one area with this device. It REALLY is a great product at a very good price point if you know what you're getting.
If you know about coding, protocols, and like to tinker than this product is absolutely for you. If you want to have your house speak the temp only on days that are marked...
I jumped on the Z-Wave bandwagon a few years back. I've had some level of home automation for at least a decade, but after moving into a more modern house that was worthy of the expense, I decided to go all-in on automation. I currently have well over 80 devices in my home, including light switches, door locks, thermostats, motion detectors, cameras, and AC outlets (most of them have energy meters/monitoring). I don't have any regrets, but it's definitely been a wild ride characterized by numerous victories and some serious hair pulling.
I put together this review and broke it down into two sections, one part for new users considering home automation, and a second part for those upgrading from a previous Vera controller. I recently upgraded from the Vera3 to the VeraPlus.
When I began my controller selection process, I was drawn to Z-Wave due to its popularity. I had heard rumors of HomeKit and I nearly put off my home automation project to see it debut. I'm glad...
I have been user of VeraLite for many years and recently upgraded to VeraPlus. Although I agree that upgrade process was not perfect and new device has some issues that did not exist in previous model, I don’t think 1 star ratings are fair. If you have a large existing installation with different Vera controller, read up the forums before diving in. For the benefit of everyone else – 1. In my humble opinion, UI7 is not as bad as many people say it is. It takes many concepts from latest Android UI and I spent fraction of time learning it as compared to UI5 or UI6. 2. I have not had any problems with “core” features of UI7 / VeraPlus. Automation works just fine and I am able to use Zigbe, Z-Wave, WiFI devices without any issues (I have not tired Bluetooth yet.) At this point I have devices from 7 manufactures on my network.
VeraPlus has few bugs that you should be aware of:
1. Built in Geofencing does not work reliably. There...
