Additional Information

J.K. Rowling, one of the world's most inspiring writers, shares her wisdom and advice.

In 2008, J.K. Rowling delivered a deeply affecting commencement speech at Harvard University. Now published for the first time in book form, VERY GOOD LIVES presents J.K. Rowling's words of wisdom for anyone at a turning point in life. How can we embrace failure? And how can we use our imagination to better both ourselves and others?

Drawing from stories of her own post-graduate years, the world famous author addresses some of life's most important questions with acuity and emotional force.

Sales of VERY GOOD LIVES will benefit both Lumos, a non-profit international organization founded by J.K. Rowling, which works to end the institutionalization of children around the world, and university-wide financial aid at Harvard University.

This is life changing. From the first time I heard JK Rowling's commencement speech for Harvard University and read the transcript I knew that I was listening to great wisdom that would take hold and change me on a visceral level. These aren't words of a pep talk from some billionaire who never really had it THAT hard. These are words of a woman who truly struggled, and overcame. She chased her dream. She was of her own accord, at rock bottom. These words gave me the courage to pick myself up, and start chasing my own dreams. I felt about as low as a person could possibly be. I had given up. I didn't want to hear self help garbage from some quack. I didn't want to hear how I had failed. I did that enough to myself. Hearing these words, just conveyed as a story, helped. More importantly, I realized that failure isn't always bad. Failure has benefits. Failure can happen to anyone, but it needs to be embraced, fully, as a learning experience, a clean slate, and a solid foundation from... Read more
After reading J.K.'s speech to the Harvard class of 2008 it has changed my life. The things she said in her speech are very touching and make me think of everything I once thought I knew. For one thing, I have stuttered since I was nine years old. It started as a severe stutter and now has dwindled down to moderate. I plan on helping other People Who Stutter (PWS) after I get my degree in Journalism. J.K. Rowling, you have made my dream seem even more important than I originally imagined. Thank You for changing my life. :-)
When the weather warms up and trees begin to bloom, people's thoughts turn to graduation day. Invariably, slim volumes are released in which famous individuals' commencement addresses are packaged in book form. Back in 2008, forty-two year old J. K. Rowling spoke at Harvard University. Her remarks appear in "Very Good Lives."

With eye-catching black, white, and red illustrations, courtesy of Joel Holland, "Very Good Lives" is funny, self-deprecating, down-to-earth, and heartfelt. We can picture the big laugh Rowling must have gotten when she gazed at the red banners surrounding her and announced that she must be "at the world's largest Gryffiindor reunion." Other quips follow. On a more serious note, she emphasizes the importance of imagination, the rewards of failure, and the desirability of choosing fulfilling work that brings us joy.

The speaker refers to the tough times she experienced as an impoverished single parent, before deciding to follow her... Read more
