Plot Synopsis
Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited stars Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, and Adrien Brody as three brothers who, at the insistence of the oldest, take a train ride through India together in order to strengthen their bond. Even though the vacation goes wrong in ways they do not anticipate, the strangeness of their setting and some revealing honesty produces some surprising changes between them all.

The scenery is beautiful. The dialogue is purposely awkward and most of the main characters are borderline sociopaths, which is typical of this director. Wes Anderson controls many details of his films and for that reason they aren't very realistic emotionally.

The jokes are mostly deadpan or subtle or both. That's not to say there aren't laugh-out-loud moments. Very quirky and if you haven't seen a Wes Anderson film before, this is one of his most accessible. People tend to think he's a perpetual college student with his head in the clouds, and i tend to agree with them, but he does make an entertaining film.

I realize this review is inconsistent but maybe I should explain-- I was in high school when this came out and LOVED it. 6 years later i'm not nearly as impressed and gave my copy away. If you enjoy slapstick humor of the intellectual variety, try this movie. If you want to see a "normal" movie featuring characters with realistic behaviors... Read more
This was the third of Wes Anderson's movies I had seen other than The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou that I saw at the movies and didn't like. The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I loved, was second. I loved this film too and the performances of Adrien Brody,Jason Schwartzman, and Owen Wilson were excellent. I found it at times hysterically funny, poignant and sad. I felt like it was going on vacation to a place you really love and before your trip has ended, already thinking about the next time you'll go there.Seeing this prompted me to buy most of Wes Anderson's other movies.
This tongue-in-cheek comedy was a delight to watch, mainly because of its series of peculiar unfolding events that befall three estranged brothers making their way through India by train and taxi to seek their recluse mother, an improbable situation at best. "It's all about the journey", as other reviewers have noted, although one could glimpse a deeper meaning to the odyssey if it weren't quite so silly. Alternatively, one might imagine following long-ago tracks of the Beatles, who did stints in India to help make sense of all the money they were making. Anyway, three rousing cheers for director Wes Anderson and the same for colorful India itself.
