A good book for touring the site
Mike Sigalas's Timeline: Vicksburg is my favorite portable guide to one of America's greatest National Military Battlefields. Sigalas's extensive use of primary sources (including memoirs and especially, some never-before-published soldiers' letters home) sheds a warm, human light upon this well-known military saga. Walking the battlefield with Sigalas's book in my hand was like walking beside a passionate friend with a deep and broad knowledge of the Civil War, generally, the Vicksburg Campaign, in particular, and bearing strong convictions about the ethical atrocities committed in the name of any Great Cause. Sigalas--- raised in the American West--- comes across as neither a Southern nor Northern partisan, but rather, as an advocate for the common man-turned-soldier--- the sons, fathers, and husbands who died by the thousands in the various, and all unsuccessful, attacks upon the besieged city. You can always tell when a bad Civil War history book was written by a Southerner. They try to rewrite history to make the Yankees into the villains.

This book was written by a South Carolina writer and a Texas A&M historian. Whichever one wrote the history portions of the book makes a classic mistake of bad historical non-fiction. They examine history from a 21st century P.O.V., instead of looking at the time period itself (in this case, the Civil War) and examining the motives and mentality of the people who participated in the historic events.

In this book, the author portrays the Union commanders at Vicksburg -- Grant and Sherman -- as reckless, heartless military despots with no regard for the lives of their troops. The author goes on for pages and pages about how Grant and Sherman sent their men in "repeated, futile assaults" and "suicidal charges" against the Confederate fortifications at Vicksburg, and that the two generals "must have known" that these...
