I used this to connect my Panasonic Viera Plasma TV fiber audio output to an inexpensive stereo amplifier (and to have access to using earphones, which I cannot do on my Plasma TV by itself). This is the simplest solution I could find, and have been completely thrilled with its performance and cost.
It works GREAT! No noise, crisp and clean. I needed a Decoder- Not a Converter- to change my AC-3 optic audio out signal to analog. I power this VHD via the TV USB (although it comes with a power supply) which turns on and goes off with my TV (LG 42LB5600/ AC-3 signal, Optic audio out). The analog out on the VHD goes to a small Lepai 2020A+ stereo amplifier which powers two 8" speakers (20 watts/sold by Amazon). In a 15' X 15' room I never turn it up past half-way. I also play CDs and music DVDs on my Blu-Ray player through the TV audio out with amazingly clear sound- everything from Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's to The Endless River. The only down side is that the head phone jack is "line level" and needs a small amplifier. Had I bought a Vizio screen I wouldn't have needed the decoder or an Optic cable, given that Vizio has a head phone jack, audio out. I believe, Samsung and Sanyo have the same feature. My second choice was an SMSL, SD793-II which had a head...
My wireless headphones have only one input. So I use this to listen to the Fire TV through my speaker system/wired studio headphones. Works great.
