Additional Information

Glorifying the recovered pleasures of fine cloth, rich texture, and a relaxed fit, this collection of vintage patterns draws its inspiration from the charm, simplicity, and elegance of mid-20th-century clothing. Rejuvenated by the postwar years, men and women embraced styles that captured feminine appeal and masculine exuberance, with well-tailored designs and graceful finishing touches that are re-created here. The 31 patterns in this volume—from cardigans and jackets to scarves and pullovers—have been inspired by old photographs, archival patterns, and classic Hollywood films and have been adapted for modern figures and contemporary knitters.

The cover doesn't do the book justice, it doesn't hint at the really great stuff inside. Although the book has patterns for both men's and women's sweaters the men's are really more interesting. But this doesn't mean that you can't adjust the measurements and make them for women. Let's face it many times the sweaters in the men's department are more interesting than in women's.
There is a great black and white Scandinavian yolk sweater that is currently being made in dark blue and cream and an Aran with shoulder buttons made in a brown tweed yarn. A great men's sweater in tan tweed with moss stitch elbow patches and a laid back collar. There are many classic shapes and one striped sweater that some rows are only one row wide. Great way to use up the leftover stash, as long as you save enough yarn for the sleeve to match across. It's done on size 3, but this doesn't mean that you couldn't do it on larger and adjust the 30 sts to 4 inches to larger yarn. I'd knit it without... Read more
...maybe I'll have the skill to knit them by the end of the decade! In my first year of learning how to knit I absolutely fell in love with this book and took it home with me, determined to get good enough to knit *something* out of it. The more I learned, the more I began to realize that this is not a terribly accessible least not for a beginning to novice level knitter. After gathering two and a half years of experience there are still very few patterns in here that I would feel confident tackling (and they aren't the most exciting and in some cases I would rather go buy a sweater than subject myself to all that stockinette) and the majority of them have at least one term I haven't heard of yet. It does offer a number of color work patterns, as well as extremely textural knits that utilize complex cabling and baubles. There are a few very handsome straightforward garments as well. I think the majority of the patterns are for knitting, though there is at least one crochet... Read more
I was surprised and disappointed to find that instructions for all the women's sweaters in this book top out at what is labeled an XL but which fits only a 40" bust, comparable to a size 14 dress or a medium t-shirt, and which is a measurement I haven't been able to claim since the eighth grade. I don't buy the usual excuse, that people were smaller in the past, for tiny-sizing vintage patterns: my grandmother, born in 1889, and my mother, born in 1923, were both 5'11" with figures proportionate to that height, just like me born in 1951. So unless you are a small woman or are knitting for a kid, this is not the book for you.
