Additional Information

Book XII brings Virgil's Aeneid to a close, as the long-delayed single combat between Aeneas and Turnus ends with Turnus' death - a finale that many readers find more unsettling than triumphant. In this, the first detailed single-volume commentary on the book in any language, Professor Tarrant explores Virgil's complex portrayal of the opposing champions, his use and transformation of earlier poetry (Homer's in particular) and his shaping of the narrative in its final phases. In addition to the linguistic and thematic commentary, the volume contains a substantial introduction that discusses the larger literary and historical issues raised by the poem's conclusion; other sections include accounts of Virgil's metre, later treatments of the book's events in art and music, and the transmission of the text. The edition is designed for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students and will also be of interest to scholars of Latin literature.

Let me start by pointing out the obvious. This is a unique kind of textbook, typical of Cambridge Latin texts (the green and golds). The 12th book of the Aeneid is here in the original Latin, filled out with apparatus criticus, but absolutely no translation. There is a thoughtful English introduction by Professor Tarrant, an insightful guide for the topic, and the majority of the book by far is taken up with detailed, line-by-line commentary on the Latin text, ranging from grammar and vocabulary help to allusions from other Classical authors (Homer in particular). No glossary in the back; bring your own dictionary if you need it.

If you don't read Latin at least a little bit, look elsewhere. If you do read Latin, then read on.

Tarrant is clearly at home discussing any variety of topics in this book. He elucidates a number of fine points in Vergil's work, and I appreciated reading the 12th book of the Aeneid more thanks to his commentary and, to a slightly lesser... Read more
I'm just about 500 lines into this commentary and loving it. This commentary is a pure joy to read. Not only is the grammar, vocabulary, style, and meter handled so well, but there are some great treasures inside. I loved the note at ln 55.: Housman's blush at moritura and Ribbeck's "blush" by making an emendation. This is the first recent commentary in a while that brings me back to reading Austin's commentaries on the Aeneid. Here, the scholarship is first rate and there are those pieces which make the use of a commentary fun while at the same time so useful.
This is an extremely important edition of one of the greatest books of one of the greatest poems ever written. It is learned, readable, insightful, convincing. A. P. teachers will be able to use it very fully in their planning and teaching , while for college professors it is de rigeur. What an achievement on the part of Professor Tarrant, an absolutely superb Latinist.
