COLES WRITES WITH VERACITY, WITH A DELICIOUS STREAK OF SUBVERSION.”
STEVEN ERIKSON, New York Times bestselling author of Gardens of the Moon

Lieutenant Katja Emmes is assigned to the fast-attack craft Rapier, joining a mission to investigate weapons smuggling activity between the Terran colonies of Sirius and Centauria. If true, this act of rebellion could escalate rapidly, and lead to all-out war.

When combat does erupt, its ferocity stuns the Terran forces, and pushes them to their limits. It tests the abilities of Lieutenant Emmes, as well, along with Sublieutenant Jack Mallory and Lieutenant Commander Thomas Kane, commanding officer of the Rapier. But failure is not acceptable.

They must defeat the enemy... by whatever means necessary.

The Virtues of War starts of fairly slowly, and is a bit disjoint as we hop from character to character, but relatively quickly it settles down and builds into a pretty good set of ground and space battles described in third person from the viewpoint of the various protagonists. The main characters are reasonably competent and, even better, are fairly unique individuals. The author has taken time to craft different personalities and present them so that they have different areas of understanding. Some of the characters are annoying, but since one of my pet peeves are supposedly different characters that know all the same things and talk about the same things, I can hardly complain when some of the the characters in Virtues of War are complete jerks, but still unique and complex individuals.

I find it mildly amusing to ponder who the author is modeling these characters after.

I have a bit of an issue with the hail Mary technological breakthrough ending to the... Read more
I love a story that doesn't over-emphasize the improbable. This way we can believe in the hero. Bennet Coles delivers in a way that pulled me into the story and made me believe and care for the wellbeing of the main character. Coles allows us to see the flaws and shortcoming of the characters. A reader can always tell if the writer cares for his characters, and in the case of this novel, the writer cares. Perhaps it's his real-life experiences that come through to the reader?
No spoilers here. Virtues Of War is a must read.
At this point, there is little to add to what has already been said. I enjoyed the length of the book and the pace of the action. I agree with an earlier comment that the tension between the characters and the self-centered motivation of the officers did not set right with me--but it did make for an interesting story. I guess the twist, for me at least, is unlike most military science fiction works, there was no real stand alone hero. I will buy the next book in the series.
