This is a beast of a drive - massive amounts of storage, tons of processing power, and a pretty steep price of admission. That 16TB refers to the four WD Red 4TB drives included inside the drive. Actual storage is more like 11.8TB - depending on which RAID configuration you choose (you could get about 16TB with a RAID 0 configuration, not recommended though).
What is it? I explained some of the stuff it can do to my son - you mean a personal Dropbox Dad? Yeah, exactly right, and then a lot more things.
Think music, movies (not ripped DVD / Blu-Ray - unless you Handbrake them), pictures, and any other file in the universe. Overlay simple computer backup. The biggest plus for this drive, it is 100% TimeMachine compatible - there is nothing you have to do to the drive to make it work as an Apple TimeMachine drive - connect and run TimeMachine.
Then add individual user accounts for each person in my family. This space is now a private area they can store...
I have had the WD 8TB My Cloud PR2100 for a few months. It works fine as a NAS; no complaints. However, I bought the PR2100 for its Plex features, which need a lot of work. There is a hardware transcoding issue with the newer versions of Plex on the PR2110, and I see that the devs are working on it. The big issue I have though is its inability to see any other drive on your local network within Plex on the PR2100. I have more media than this one NAS can hold (I have more on a WD My Cloud EX2). Since Plex for other devices could see other network attached drives to add media, I assumed this one would also. I was wrong. This device can only add media to Plex that is resident on this device. If it is not on this device, it can not be added to Plex. Several people have noted this issues in various forms, however I have seen no responses from WD or Plex that they are working on or are planning on fixing the issue. The PR2100 works fine as a Plex Media Server by itself, but fails...
I purchased one of these at the recommendation of our in-house IT guy after he installed an EX4100 in our office earlier this year. He preferred the PR4100 because of the Intel processor. Installation of the two WD30EFRX Red 3 TB hard drives was a snap and setup was a breeze. I have mine configured in RAID 1 and will probably add 2 more drives in the future. Setting up user accounts and Cloud access was easy and it's nice to be able to access files remotely.
