The New York Times Bestselling Mystery There is trouble brewing in the Louisiana swamp -- Bowser can smell it. Bowser is a very handsome and only slightly slobbery dog, and he can smell lots of things. Like bacon. And rawhide chews! And the sweat on humans when they're lying. Birdie Gaux, the girl Bowser lives with, also knows something is wrong. It's not just that her grammy's stuffed prize marlin has been stolen. It's the weird rumor that the marlin is linked to a missing treasure. It's the truck that seems to be following Birdie and the bad feeling on the back of her neck. When Birdie and Bowser start digging into the mystery, not even Bowser's powerful sniffer can smell just how menacing the threat is. And when the danger comes straight for Birdie, Bowser knows it up to him to sic 'em.

Best novel from the point of view of a dog that I've ever read. Quinn creates a fascinating, believable mystery novel about a young girl and her grandmother struggling to keep their Cajun country bait shop from getting crushed by a ruthless competitor. The girl and her dog don't do anything that strains believability - the dog, especially, remains within dog-land with everything he actually does. Meanwhile, though, the dog remains a wonderfully witty narrator in spite of, or because of, all the things about human society that he doesn't understand. We enjoy the dog because of his voice, and come to love him for his fierce loyalty. I loved this book as an adult reader; the children I know who have read it love it, if anything, more.
I am almost a senior citizen, but I loved this book. I have all the Chet and Bernie novels, but I liked this one as well, maybe better. It's very similar - Bowser could be Chef's twin brother - but there's no profanity and very little violence. Birdie is a likable character, and the plot was more detailed than I expected. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series, and plan on purchasing several copies of "Woof" for my friends - both children and adults!
This Texas Bluebonnet nominee for 2016-2017 is a terrific "girl and her dog" mystery set in the bayous of Louisiana. Readers will love slobbery mutt Bowser and his ability to smell a lie on humans and to love his owner, Birdie. Both Bowser and Birdie are determined to solve the mystery of Grandma's stolen trophy Marlin and soon discover that the theft may lead them to a long lost treasure. Told from Bowser's point of view makes for very entertaining versions of what is happening with those odd humans and keeps this book moving all the way to its somewhat unexpected conclusion. And the best news is that Quinn quickly followed this book with another Bowser and Birdie mystery--Arf! Both are highly recommended for mystery/dog story fans from 4th grade and up.
