Wally Wood’s career in comics is legendary among the annals of comic’s history. He rocketed to fame working on Will Eisner’s The Spirit newspaper strip and became one of the most talented artists working for EC Comics during the 1950s. Wood also became a star of EC’s satire comic, Mad, which went on to even greater success as a magazine, allowing the artist to apply his amazing talents in a broader spectrum. When the comic’s industry fell on lean times during the mid 1950s, Wood segued into the field of science fiction pulp illustration, providing over 200 beautiful drawings and several color cover paintings for the digest magazines, particularly Galaxy. Wood left behind a legacy of great art, much of which has never been reprinted. This book will feature them all. Long time Wally Wood historian Roger Hill has spent the past twenty years pulling together the history of Wood’s involvement with the pulp digests and tracking down original art for this project. Over half of the images have been pulled from the originals or from Wood’s personal file copies, allowing Wood fans the finest possible reproduction!

In 2000 I attended the World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago. While it was a great Convention for many reasons, one of the big reasons was in addition to the regular art show they had an additional display of original art from the pulps and Science Fiction magazines. Many of these were the work of Wally Wood. This was an eye opener to this fan of Wally's comic work. It was beautiful and I thought to myself " Wow it would be great to have a collection with all this great art".
In late 2011 I first heard of this being solicited and pre-ordered it from Amazon. The book has suffered many delays and even a switch in publishers but it is finally here. Could it possibility be worth the wait? Yes, Yes, YES!
The Hard Cover is in the oversized format with quality paper and a sewn binding and crystal clear reproduction with almost half of the art shot from the original art. To say it looks great is a vast understatement.
This book has been a long-time coming. I ordered it back in 2012 and every now and again Amazon would send me a delayed shipping notice. After a while, they sent me a note that basically said "we'll send it if it ever comes out." Well, it's finally out and it was worth the wait. A beautiful book full of beautiful illustrations from one of the masters of the genre. Wally wasn't alone in defining what the people of 1950s thought the future might look like, but he is certainly one of the premier talents to do so. Well worth picking up.
If you're anything like me and have spent the last few years laboriously searching the internet for any and all images of Wally Wood's Sci-Fi art, you'll truly appreciate the enormity of the project that Roger Hill has undertaken. The quality of the reproductions is second to none (as you would expect from IDW) and truly represents a complete visual record of Wally's Sci-Fi output. Apart from the first dozen intro pages, text is restricted to basic captions for each of the illustrations. A must have for anyone truly interested in the art of Wally Wood.
