What do you think of when you hear about someone on the FBI's Most Wanted List? Hardened criminals, without morals or any sense of right and wrong, ready to solve a dispute with a gun, right? But what if things weren't that cut and dried? What if the nice guy you hired to hook up your cable was Number Seven on the FBI's list? Les Rogge looks and acts just like your next-door neighbor. Yet in twenty years he may have robbed more banks than Jesse James and Bonnie and Clyde put together--without firing a shot. Caught and put in jail twice, he escaped--and went sailing around the Caribbean with his wife and dog! In Wanted: Gentleman Bank Robber: The True Story of Leslie Ibsen Rogge, One of the FBI's Most Elusive Criminals, Les details his adventures from Alaska to Antigua, the Chesapeake to Cancn, in everything from a converted shrimp boat at an abandoned marina to an R.V. at a Mayan ruin--and hundreds of vehicles and venues in between. But it all came to a halt when a fourteen-year-old in Guatemala forced him to turn himself in. Few felons have been as forthcoming about their successes, failures, robbery techniques, passion for sailing vessels... and love for his wife.

"Wanted: Gentleman Bank Robber" reads like a criminal travelogue. Leslie Isben Rogge robbed banks for twenty years and was on the FBI's top ten most wanted list. He was caught and escaped twice. While on the run, he traveled all over the US, even to Alaska, sailed around the Caribbean, and hid out in Mexico and Central America before finally turning himself in.

In federal prison, it appears there are two types of bank robbers: dope fiends, the most common, who reach the end of their rope and rob out of desperation, and those like Rogge, who seem to thrive on the rush, and love the thrill of easy money. The latter seems to be more successful in their criminal pursuits but they both end up in prison anyway.

I was - he didn't "physically hurt anyone and the banks are insured." He seemed to have a total disregard for how his actions affected the lives of others. He used the same modus operandi and always told the bank employees not to "turn this into a homicide."... Read more
Kudos for the nephew's attempt to chronologically track the odyssey of his uncle's wild bank robbery sprees. It is to some degree insightful and partially humorous, while protaganist's inability to fit in with society is as impossible as a square fitting into a circle. But that is characteristic of most people whose agenda is to be absolutely free, unencumbered by a rigidly conformed society of rules. When looked closely into cases as such one will find more often a misguided 'genius' awaiting self-discovery. However, with the book itself, it does grab the reader's attention at first, imbuing it with eager anticipation, but eventually it tends to baffle logic and timelines, leaving one to wonder if these tales told really did happen, as one will discover soon the holes in story. But, all in all, it is a good read, and I commend the nephew's writing, and would like to know if he is interested in journalism, as that should be the field for him. Best of luck to him!
Wanted: Gentleman Bank Robber is the true story of Leslie Ibsen Rogge who, during the span of two decades, did the unthinkable: he robbed over 30 banks, stole over $2M, appeared on "America's Most Wanted", and spent over a decade eluding the FBI while on their Top Ten List. And he did all of it without hurting anyone.

A sample chapter of the book is available online ([...]), and it's a fascinating insight into how Rogge planned a bank robbery. Well, two actually (he decided robbing a second bank would be a good idea, while the cops were busy reacting to the first one).

It's a fairly detailed account, and it's this attention to the particulars that makes reading about Rogge's lifestyle so fascinating. While Rogge carried a gun, the most he ever did was show off his holster. His typical approach would be to dress in a suit, contact the bank manager and relocate into his or her office. There, he would alert the manager that his intention was to rob the bank:... Read more
