Product Description

  • The history of warfare
  • American First Edition
Additional Information

War has been central to the rise and fall of civilizations since the dawn of time. The history of warfare first emerges from legend in Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, around 3,000 years before the birth of Christ. The first armies that we know about fought in Sumeria, Ancient Egypt, and Syria. From these first battles, fought with spears or axes on horseback or on foot, War traces the campaigns and conflicts that have shaped world history and examines the evolution of military tactics and technology.

War combines a coherent and compelling spread-by-spread historical narrative with a wealth of supporting features on weapons and technology, strategy and tactics, the experience of war, and history's fighting elites to recount the epic 5,000-year story of warfare and combat through the ages.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

"War" is another of DK Publishing's fine Definitive Visual Guides reference series...very extensive, easy to follow, interesting to read, no matter whether you go through the text and graphics thoroughly or just browse through it.

The book's visuals are eye-catching, and the text delivers what the dust jacket promises -- it surveys the world's military history from Bronze Age battles up to the present era.

I think the "acid" test one can give a coffee table book such as this is to get a professional librarian's opinion, and when I talked to a librarian recently about DK Publishing's Guides, she had nothing but high praise for them. "War" is a good example of the high quality she referred to; I'm pleased to have acquired it.
Beautifully illustrated. Covers all the great battles, including the battle of 73 Easting in the Iraq war, where M1A1 Abrams tanks destroyed Saddam's elite armored brigade.
Great book I love it. Recommended for anyone who likes military history and power shifts through time.
