Firstly, the finish on this instrument was truly amazing, complete with faux scratch marks and faded stains. The volume was also louder, as this mandolin's depth was deeper than usual. The tone was acceptable, however, it is not as smooth as other mandolins in the 200$ range. It would make an excellent strumming instrument, but for me, a classical musician, the tone is unacceptable. Also, a major problem with my instrument was that a few hours after playing it, I started to notice a lot of fret buzz in the G and D strings, and fret buzz was dangerously apparent within the A and E strings. The action also seemed way too high. I took it to a local repairer, and he claimed that 1) the nut was way too high, 2) the frets were extremely uneven, and 3) the bridge was in the wrong position. Maybe I was just unfortunate to get the odd one, but still, I am starting to doubt the reliability to even the very expensive instruments sold online. Make sure you play the instrument before you buy it.
I'm a long time guitar player, and I have been very pleased with this Washburn mandolin ... Love it! Plays and sounds great, and I really like the vintage look of the mandolin and case. I saw some other reviews that stated that it needed a setup, this is correct. I set it up myself, adjusting the action and intonation ... One should not expect an instrument like this ( from any manufacturer) to come properly setup from the factory.
I ordered this mandolin several months ago and wanted to give it some time before writing a review. As one other reviewer indicated, this instrument in particular needed a good professional set-up. This included a new bone nut because the original nut was totally screwed up having the strings at different heights above the fretboard. After the $100 set-up there is no doubt that this plays like a thousand dollar mandolin. Common instruments in the price range include the Kentucky line. I was not completely satisfied with the Kentucky's I played at Mandolin Brothers, so I took a chance and ordered this Washburn and I'm happy I did because the sound is better than similarly priced Kentucky mandolins. The tone is good, to get something better you'd have to step up to a moderately priced Weber for most likely $1600. This mando is much better than my $350 Morgan Monroe I previously had and is quite a step up from any $300-400 mandolin. I still dream of a Collings, but this instrument...
