Additional Information

This is the first book in a series created for children, written by author Rose Mckey. Rose is well-known for her ‘Kitchi The Bear’ series, a collection of adventure stories, also for children. This series, known as the ‘Garden Friends’ series, is a collection of delightful stories for children aged 4 to 8 years old. Each book tells the story of a different character in Moonstone Garden. Father Sun watches over the garden friends each day, and Mother Moon lights their way at night.
Each tale sends a special message to children, which will help them to grow and create their own morals and values. High-quality illustrations help to portray the story and each character well, creating an eye-pleasing journey for children to enjoy.
In this book, Gru the caterpillar watches all of his friends playing, from up in his great big tree. He sees that each of them has something that makes them really special. He wonders to himself, ‘What makes me so special?’ but he can’t find an answer. Father Sun tells him that he does have something special, but he has to wait for the something special to show itself to him. Trusting in Father Sun, Gru waits for the day when he will learn more about himself. What will happen to Gru? What will he learn? What is it that makes him so special? Join him and his garden friends to find out.

What Makes Me Special - Gru the caterpillar - Garden Friends series) by Rose Mckey
This illustrated colorful children's book is about the life of a caterpillar.
Everyday Father sun wakes him up and reminds him to eat. then at lunch and then at dinner.
Gru enjoys hanging from a tree watching the other animals in the garden.
He was sad because all the others can do things he can not. He asks Father sun what is special about him and he tells him to just wait...
When the spring comes he pops out of his cocoon. He realizes just how important and special they all are.
Gru felt sad because he couldn't do the things his other friends could do, after all, he was just a caterpillar.
Of course, if you remember your science, you knew what was going to happen to Gru long before he spun that cocoon.
If you're lucky enough to have the room to plant a few things, you can help caterpillars like Gru live and grow. Butterflies need both nectar to eat and special plants for nesting. They won't lay their eggs just anywhere!
I discovered a nesting plant by accident when I first planted carrots. Soon I had a colony of white caterpillars with yellow and black stripes chewing on the carrot tops and I didn't care if the carrots survived or not. My daughters were almost four and barely two. They had been encouraged to hold frogs, so they loved the 'callapitters'. We had to leave 15 minutes earlier for day care because they both wanted to wear 'callapitters' on their shirts-every day.
Some of the other nesting plants are willow trees, dill weed,... Read more
Rose's characters are always great and full of personality. My children and I have enjoyed this story about Gru and we look forward to reading about his other friends in moonstone garden. The book itself is wonderfully presented and is worth the money I spent.
We look forward to the next story.
My children certainly enjoyed this story about Gru the caterpillar. I like to collect books in a series and am pleased to know that there are more to come. The story is well-written, easy enough for children of a young age to understand, yet I can see that older children might enjoy it as much. The message is great and it's good to know I have spent my money on something that is both entertaining and educational. The illustrations are good too and make the story that much more enjoyable to read.
