Additional Information

What Makes a Baby is extraordinary! Cory is a Dr. Spock for the 21st century.”—Susie Bright

“A Truly Inclusive Way to Answer the Question 'Where Do Babies Come From?': The new book What Makes a Baby offers an origin story for all children, no matter what their families look like." The Atlantic

"This is a solid, occasionally quirky book on an important topic."—School Library Journal

Geared to readers from preschool to age eight, What Makes a Baby is a book for every kind of family and every kind of kid. It is a twenty-first century children’s picture book about conception, gestation, and birth, which reflects the reality of our modern time by being inclusive of all kinds of kids, adults, and families, regardless of how many people were involved, their orientation, gender and other identity, or family composition. Just as important, the story doesn’t gender people or body parts, so most parents and families will find that it leaves room for them to educate their child without having to erase their own experience.

Written by sexuality educator Cory Silverberg, and illustrated by award-winning Canadian artist Fiona Smyth, What Makes a Baby is as fun to look at as it is useful to read.

My six year old and I read this book yesterday and while he's well above the reading level necessary to understand this book, he was able to learn a lot from the topics discussed. Egg, sperm, uterus, and one use of the word "vagina" to describe how the baby is born, is as "graphic" as this book gets, making it truly appropriate for all ages. I wish I'd gotten it earlier than I did! My son is reading at a much higher level than his classmates, so it's quite possible that other 6 year olds will be more engaged with this book (the recommended 3-7 age range is very accurate in my opinion). Even though he would have preferred to have something more challenging to read, he still visibly enjoyed it and he was excited for the next book. I'll be reading through "Sex is a Funny Word" before reading it with him, but so far I have nothing but praise for this series and the way it approaches all aspects of sex in an open and supportive way. I finally purchased the books... Read more
Very nice guide for little kids. All the information is there without ever saying any words defining gender or parental role. No mommy or daddy, or any of this nonsense. The process is described in the most generalized term possible to encompass any realistic scenario, from traditional family, to adoptions, IVF, surrogacy, same sex families, or anything else you could imagine. The sperm and egg do the dance, and tell each other stories about bodies they came from.
My five year old loves reading the book. He asks for it all the time. At the end of the book, there is a question: who was waiting for you to be born? And he always answers - "No one! I wasn't born, I came from another planet!" Is there a book for that?
Bravo to the author's of this book! If you need an ice breaker for the whole "birds and the bees" with your kids- start with this! My 4 year old loves this, and as a former midwife and now mom- so do I. It is factual and matter of fact, doesn't assign gender, religious beliefs, or other hocus pocus in the topic of making babies. The illustrations are colorful and allow the reader to make of them as they will (basically the figures in the book are gender neutral appearing). It has allowed for us to start discussing the hows and whys, etc at a level and understanding that she is ready for.

This book really needs to win awards- I don't know what awards this would qualify for, but I would give it the Bourgeois Family Gold Star Approval!
