As an American who lives outside of my home country, I am regularly called upon to explain to my European friends how so many in America can be against health care, how so many "common" people are voting for the Republican Party, what has happened to pro-labor policies; and how so many poor seem to be aligned, rather than opposed to, the voting policies of the rich.
This book really answers those questions well. Furthermore, the writing style is fantastic. Every time one picks it up, it's nearly impossible to put down. I read the entire thing in just five days.
The quick answer here is that Democrats used to have the votes of the common man, and of blue-collar labor, because they concentrated on economic issues. Around 1990 the Democrats stopped talking about economic issues because they needed to RAISE MORE MONEY FROM BIG DONORS. They stopped talking about minimum wage issues and business practices that hurt small workers. Those small workers only...
My "used-like-new" hard bound copy of "What's the Matter With Kansas?" finally arrived this morning. I had finished reading the limited Kindle sample edition, and have been listening to the Audible edition while waiting. I love Audible, but it's "not the same" for books like "Kansas," which, for me, invite compulsive highlighting, underlining, and marginal notes.
My own political odyssey has taken me from Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley Jr. in high school (including an amused flirtation with the John Birch Society) ... through a mostly left-leaning education in political science at Stanford University (including an amused flirtation with the Students for a Democratic Society) ... to an epiphany of despair with any kind of political engagement after the horrors of 1968 -- the murders of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, and the police riots at the national Democratic convention in Chicago.
Some of the folks that Frank describes I see as our own potential Taliban. Giving their lives for abortion rights. How brainwashed do you have to be to think that issue, which has nothing to do with you personally is more important than the general well being of the American people and how they are treated and governed. These people are only a step away from strapping on the C-4 and heading to an abortion clinic, with no concern for our education system, equality, taxes, corruption, our out of control banks, and on and on. Our country was founded on principles that have been discarded and these people could care less. Pulling the rug out from under the programs that would/could make the common person trouble makers for the government and the rich has been a very successful program indeed. We go to football games and races as if they were the only thing that mattered in life. Trouble ahead... Thank you Mr. Frank for pointing it out and how it started. I can see the end.
