this HDMI adapter for the Wii is pretty much like all the others available "out there". the picture quality is stellar -- just a little bit better than using a Wii component cable (slightly sharper, looks better, colours look a bit more vibrant than the component cable) -- but the audio output has a pretty serious problem with clipping/distortion. it doesn't seem to matter if you use the HDMI for the audio or the 3.5mm jack -- both are incredibly LOUD and distorted. with some games, this isn't a problem as the audio output is low, but with games like New Super Mario Bros Wii and countless others, you'll hear distortion. it's VERY annoying.
several of these adapters, all branded by different companies but having a similar plastic housing and footprint all have this problem, which says that this is pretty much a design flaw, and the companies that copied the design have replicated this problem to their clones. it probably amplifies the signal when it's not supposed to...
It does work, I'll give it that. I had to use a paper clip to switch it from 1080p to 720p, and it displays fine at first glance when you first hook it all up... but either I have a defective unit or this poor little stick just doesn't have enough juice to convert every single frame. I get really bad screen tearing on a Projection screen television when using this. Sometimes it's not noticable, but other times like today it was really bad. I was playing a SNES Virtual Console game and the screen just kept tearing up about 3/4 of the way towards the bottom of the screen. it's like the previous 10 frames would be "stuck". Now honestly, I can see why this might happen. Asking for an upscaler in such a small package is a lot, and for what this stick accomplishes is amazing, But I think from now on I'll only reccomend the versions that don't "upscale" and only just pass through the signal. One last thing worth noting since I use the Wii a lot is that the...
Wow, yes. First recognize that the best video output the Wii has is S-Video, which has its limits - you will never get 1080p quality. However, this HDMI adapter replicates the Wii's output perfectly.
My Wii is on the other side of the room with a large projector set-up, and the long run of composite cable caused the image to be washed out. Using this to convert to HDMI enabled me to get much higher quality video and sound without worrying about analog degradation. It works perfectly.
