I own both this and "Greenspan's Basic & Clinical Endocrinology." Greenspan's is a great reference, but doesn't compare as far as depth. But then again, it doesn't weigh in at ten pounds, so if portability is important to you, opt for the Greenspan's instead. Given the breadth of the subject covered, there are lapses even in such a large work. The section on glucocorticoids, for example, lacks a complete explanation of the effects these agents have on gut flora and intestinal-barrier function. And other sections will require you to search the published literature to fill in the gaps. Nevertheless, this is the most comprehensive endocrinology text on the market, and I highly recommend having a copy in your library.
I'm a medical student and this was the recommended book for our endocrinology unit. It's an impossible amount of information that goes into extremely minute details of endocrinology. I hit one section that summarized a review of the molecular mechanisms surrounding some basic phenomenon. All of the mechanisms were postulated and none proven. This "summary" stretched on for numerous pages--it would have taken me at least an hour to get through. This made me question--why would I not just go online and find the review myself? I feel like the whole book is like this. It's like a non-updating version of PubMed. I think massive reference textbooks like this might have been useful before the advent of the internet, but I can honestly say that I will never use this textbook. I really wish that I hadn't spent my money on this.
Latest edition, with all tables & figures, rapid navigation. And slightly cheaper than the paper version. A good buy.for reference, since it's the standard text in endocrinology.
