There is no New York neighborhood that boasts a richer history or more exciting present than Williamsburg. At first a quiet waterside community, Williamsburg briefly became a wealthy suburb of Manhattan in the middle of the nineteenth century. Heavy industrialization and a tidal wave of immigrants later turned Williamsburg into New York’s poorest, most crowded quarter. With images drawn chiefly from the rich photographic collection of the Brooklyn Historical Society, Williamsburg illustrates the neighborhood’s transformation from one of New York’s most impoverished and least fashionable neighborhoods to a modern-day example of the city’s capacity for self-renewal.

This, like many other books in the series, highlights the history of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY in old photographs of key streets that we know as trendy today--or under re-development. My family--the Bender's--lived well at 87 Kent Avenue, Bedford, N 6th and 8th from the 1820's to 1920's. Then post-Williamsburg Bridge (1904), the New Generation headed for Bay Ridge and Glendale to establish businesses and a less-industrial life. Williamsburg has experienced a resurgence or Renaissance as artists from Chelsea occupy old warehouses and real estate developers creaste "luxury" condos for half a million dollars. Take a look and read about its history. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Very interesting book for those who lived in Williamsburg prior to gentrification.
