A British dining and drinking society, The Other Club, was founded by Winston Churchill along with Lord Birkenhead, meeting fortnightly in the Pinafore Room at the Savoy Hotel during periods when Parliament was in session. Many of the club's members adopted the "Churchill Martini" as a favorite version of the classic cocktail. When mixing his martini, Sir Winston poured the requisite dose of gin over ice in a cocktail shaker, then gazed across the room at a bottle of vermouth. After a 30-second stir, the drink was strained into Savoy's gold-rimmed stemmed glass with inverted cone bowl, and following tradition, offered with a toast to the British Empire.
