Comments From Other Readers

“These stories really would make great movies (and one apparently already inspired one!), but as the saying goes, ‘Truth is stranger than fiction.’ One thing is for sure; I would certainly not have survived such events as these men did, especially in some of the conditions they were forced to endure! For that, my hat is off to them.” – Josh G. (Goldsboro, USA)

“You can talk about your feats of strength and crazy marathons all day long, but none will compare to the stories contained in this book. I could hardly believe that any man could survive some of these conditions! History’s true tales are often fascinating, and these are no exception.” – Meredith M. (Glasgow, UK)

“I’ve always been a sucker for a good ‘prison break’ story, so I figured this book was worth a shot. I had my expectations met and a whole lot more. These escapes are beyond imagination, and it’s clear that they had God and luck on their side!” – Rob F. (Kinston, USA)

Three short chapters concerning three different escapes which makes me believe there is even more to the stories. Damon Gause died back in '44 but somewhere out there his diary exists in book form which I would love to read (great photos included as part of the chapter, too) I cringed when I read that Jan Baalsrud amputated nine of his own toes, but what struck me most was the passage "The mission was to use the boat, which was also packed with explosives, to get close to a remote German control tower, destroy the explosives, and escape in a smaller boat" which reminds me very much of a movie I seen a while back. And who doesn't remember "The Great Escape", yet to learn that of the thirteen mass escapes only twelve men ever made it to friendly territory was rather incredible! A very good book and left we wondering how the other dozen mass escapes fared.
By now – I’ve read a lot of books by Ryan Jenkins. A lot seriously. I have purchased almost all of his books. Like most of his books , this one was also precise and informational . The rest of the book was just okay but I was particularly intrigued to read the First Chapter about the POWs by Japanese at the Bataan Peninsula. The Japanese never treated them as POWs but as captives. It was adventurous and interesting to read about the prisoner’s escape. However , a few spelling and editing mistakes - were a mark down and that is the reason why I am giving it 1 star less.
Stories about soldiers who have escaped from POW camps or prisons are fascinating to hear or read because it was amazing that these fears could be accomplished. "The Most Daring Prison Breaks in WWII" is a wonderful book that factually shares the stories from around the world that may not be commonly shared tales or known to the younger generations. American Rocky Gause was able to escape the Death March of Bataan and earned the Distinguished Service Cross. Norwegian Jan Baalsrud was part of the resistance movement in which he barely escaped but at the loss of his toes from frostbite and gangrene. Those who escaped from Oflag V-B which inspired the movie "The Great Escape" are mentioned in detail as well. It is well put together with enough information to understand what was going on in the countries and what made these escaped so astonishing. This small introduction to some of the daring escapes of that time is a good, short read for many.
