- SPECIES DETAILS: The Vermiculate Leopard Wrasse, also known as the Blue Star Leopard Wrasse, with the scientific name Macropharyngodon bipartitus, is found in the Western Indian Ocean, including the Maldives and the East African coast. Juvenile females of this species exhibit a distinct coloration compared to the males. They typically have an orange to brown body with white spots and a prominent black spot on their belly. Juvenile females are also known to have two small eye spots on the dorsal fin and one on the anal fin which disappear as they mature.

- HABITAT REQUIREMENTS: Juvenile female Vermiculate Leopard Wrasses require a well-established, minimum 55-gallon aquarium with at least a 3-inch fine sandy substrate for burrowing at night and when threatened. They also need abundant live rock with crevices and hiding spots, which provides grazing surfaces for their diet of copepods, amphipods, and other microfauna found naturally in a mature reef system.
- COMPATIBILITY: Juvenile female Vermiculate Leopard Wrasses can generally be kept together in a group, especially if introduced simultaneously to a sufficiently sized aquarium (at least 55 gallons for a single wrasse, more for a group) with a deep sandbed (at least 3 inches) and plenty of live rock for foraging and shelter. In the wild, females are often observed in small groups with juveniles. However, as the wrasse matures, one of the females will likely transition into a male, and keeping multiple males in the same tank should be avoided unless the tank is exceptionally large, like 110+ gallons, in which case a single male can be housed with multiple females.
