Alva Noto returns with a second installment in his five-part planned Xerrox series. On this follow up to Xerrox Vol. 1 (Raster-Noton, 2007), Carsten Nicolai turns up the volume in static electricity working with the concept of copying sounds. A copy of a copy of a copy in digital format may be flawless, so what does Nicolai do? For this feat, Nicolai along with Christoph Brünggel created a "sample transformer". This software manipulation device downsamples, chops and fragments the original source, until it no longer resembles itself, becoming an error prone original, becoming a copy corrupted with noise, becoming a newly created entity in itself. I am just starting to get into the music of Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolei). I first heard on his recording with Blixa Bergeld ANBB. That was great minimal experimental pop. This Xerrox music is more strictly minimal and could be classified as ambient as it does create an ambient atmosphere. Unlike Steve Roach or Robert Rich who have very busy and lush tracks, this music is very sparse but it works well. Much of it sounds like machine hums and drones though i think it would be naive to just dismiss them as that. Some songs like Tek Part 1 do have a melody though its extremely subdued and in the background.
There may be some intellectual musings involved in Alva Noto's music that i am not in on. But in any case if you like your ambient trance music minimal rather than lush and busy you may enjoy this. As a big fan of ambient trance music i would put this as one of the best , up there with Pete Namlooks Music for Urban Meditation and Robert Rich's Somnium .
