My options included Denon, HK and this Yamaha in the $300-$400 range. It was not easy to decide and I did quite a lot of research before I bought this unit. So far I am very happy with my decision. IMHO this Yamaha has all the qualities of the good receiver:
1. Good DSP and decoder - both Dolby digital and DTS decoders has almost perfect channel separation and balance and the 192/24 bit DSP is very good. This means that sound field in movies is very detailed. Also I liked yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer modes.
2. Good amp - don't compare this yamaha's 90W (DIN) per channel with 100W power of other amps. It's at least 2 times more powerful then my old Sony 90W per channel receiver (and by the way it's about 3 times heavier). The sound is detailed and balanced - I can finally listen to the U2 "Achtung Baby" album that sounded too sharp on the old Sony. Also the "Night" modes are very valuable as we often have time to watch movies only after kids are in...
I've only really used this receiver for a week but so far I like it. This is my second Yamaha receiver after the still-functioning RX-V870 that I bought in 1993! What sold me on this receiver was 1) Yamaha brand 2) Network/Internet Radio/USB capabilities and 3) Price.
1) I can't deny it. I'm a Yamaha guy. If my first receiver was an Onkyo, I'd probably have bought another Onkyo. 2) Network and USB capabilities are what sets this receiver apart. I have thousands of mp3s on my PC and it is very easy to stream them over your home network. I wanted to listen to Japanese radio stations and I can now do so and you don't even need the PC on. And I can simply plug in a flash drive with mp3s and play music off of there. Very nifty, very convenient. 3) With the new Amazon credit card, I basically paid $200 for this excellent, high quality, high powered, high featured receiver.
Misses - The on screen menus are very archaic and can only display a...
The amp and sonic processing modes work fine for my set up (3 ch + line powered sub). The FM section works better for me than the old, dead Denon. Everything works better, actually and for the price, I'm very pleased. The video upscaling from composite and S-VHS to component works fine. Not a big thing for my usage, a value add that I might use on a blue moon.
Four stars for me. Remember that while you read my nitpicks:
The remote is OK at best, if it has your gear's codes in it. At this price point I didn't expect perfection.
The Manual is odd. It's correct and complete. It looks reasonable but organized much different than my mind flows and doesn't describe how that side button and the main buttons work (or don't or do wrong). Not a big issue for me.
Those Networking features? If any of them work it would be icing on the cake. The internet radio works fine. It's a fixed list of stations but sufficient for me. Playing music from the home...
