Nepal Handspun Recycled Sari Silk Yarn 5 Large Handspun Balls 2 lbs
5 Large Hand-spun Balls of recycled silk sari yarn. Each ball is over 6 - 8 oz. More than 150 yards per skein.
No two balls of yarn are the same. Each item you knit will be one-of-a-kind. It is recommended that you alternate skeins in order to achieve a more even effect. Cold-water wash, lay flat to dry.
Suggested needle size is US 7 through 13 (Although this yarn can be knit on the smaller needles, larger needles will result in a softer finish with a nice drape.) The picture is a representation of the yarn you will receive but are not the actual skeins themselves.
Advantages of using 5 balls is that you will use less breaks when knitting compared to 10 skeins. Same weight as our 10 skeins lot (2 lbs)
It sheds, its twist is uneven, it doesn't have much "give"; every skein is different and there are no dyelots available. And those are just a few of its strong points. On the other hand, it is 100% silk, its colors are positively and amazingly vibrant, and every skein is different. This yarn is not for the faint of heart or the fussy fiber worker. Those who live in ordered rows and exact gauge will be frustrated working with this yarn. As with other silk yarns, you may choose to air this out prior to using or wearing it. In addition it should be wound in to balls very carefully to ensure that the delicate fibers stay woven in. Ah, but the artist, the adventurous knitter/weaver/crocheter - the experimenter, will be richly rewarded with this tempermental and ultimately satisfying yarn, making truly unique items that will garner touches and compliments. Your purchase of this yarn helps to support women's development groups in Nepal who produce unique fiber arts products in their spare time in their own homes. This work provides additional income to support their families and improve their lives. Women's cooperatives and cottage industries in Nepal import silk sari remnants from garment production in India that is then handspun in gleaming silk skeins. Many of these women are Tibetan refugees or have been abandoned or widowed with families to support. Using their traditional skills they are able to create vibrant, textured yarn in a endless array of color ways. Create something beautiful and help support these women's efforts.

This yarn might be a nightmare for some, and it's all true: it sheds, it breaks, it's uneven, etc. But for me this stuff is a dream. The beauty of the fiber has to be experienced to be appreciated, and it's not that hard to work with, although it is slow going. One must be careful when working with this yarn; as with any wild thing, it requires patience and a forethought. I made a bag to hold my knitting (see photo and a close-up of seed stitch and st st), and next I intend to make a jacket. As I knit, I bless the Nepalese women who spun it for me in their own homes, with their own hands, and I am deeply honored by their efforts. Put simply, I love the yarn. My order arrived very quickly in a 100% recyclable cardboard package with no plastic at all, which I appreciate. If you, too, are a wild thing, duly reverent and/or passionate about getting creative with your art, order some. You'll be glad you did. (Oh, and the price? Exceptional!)
Absolutely beautiful yarn! I crochet, and I used an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook to create several 5-foot long mesh scarves. It took a little less than a ball of yarn to make one scarf. It is very difficult to work with and may break a few times. It's so fuzzy that you can't tell where the yarn broke after you tie it back together. It's definitely not the type of yarn for people who like even stitches and consistent gauge. It takes some effort to work, but it's well worth it!
I hardly ever give bad reviews because I was taught the whole "if you can't say something nice..." lesson. But in this case, I think I need to let people know. I've knitted many times with recycled silk yarn and made some great scarfs and other garments but this is NOTHING like it and I truly believe this yarn is NOT silk. I feel mislead and more than a little disappointed. This is rough and stiff and tears your hands up. It seems more like plastic wire. But I've bought it so I'm making the best of it. It's so rough I think it would make good bath scrubbing mitts so that's the plan. Next time I'm trying "The Original" from another seller.
