Myth or Not? Many people ask if it is true that the famous Lactobacillus Bulgaricus bacterium is found only in Bulgaria. The correct answer is no - you can grow the bacteria in different parts of the world (in fact many people do). What is unique about the Bulgarian strain is that only in Bulgaria it preserves its qualities in further generations of the same strain, i.e. if you use your previous yogurt to start your new batch. If this is how you make your yogurt outside Bulgaria, you will notice that after a batch or two, the yogurt loses its unique taste, physical appearance and qualities. Why this happens, scientists are not sure. It is often contributed to the unique climate of the region but there's more to creating the perfect conditions for Lactobacillus Bulgaricus than the environment. So how can you prepare Bulgarian yogurt abroad? The answer is simple - use a dried-freeze yogurt starter culture with live Lactobacillus Bulgaricus that was produced in Bulgaria. Use a new culture with every batch of yogurt you make to preserve the unique taste and qualities of the yogurt. In this way you can achieve the traditional taste of kiselo mlyako (кисело мляко) similar to the one our grandmothers used to make, guaranteed.

I have had digestive issues for as long as I could remember causing a lot of pain and other health issues. I was told how well Lactobacillus Bulgaricus bacterium is good for our digestive system. My friend who is from Bulgaria gave me some kiselo mlyako her mother had made and this yogurt starter tastes just like the kiselo mlyako. I would have asked my friend's mother to make some more but did not want to harrase her each time I ran out, so when I saw this online I jumped on it! Now I can make my own kiselo mlyako when I want. I spoke with my doctor who insisted I should eat foods with these live bacteria. So I can enjoy my kiselo mlyako, with approval from my doctor. I have also noticed my digestive issues going away and my abdomen pain gone. These are very easy to make, just make sure to follow the directions word by word.
I tried to make this the best way that I could and it just would not come out right for me. It is edible but the taste was off. I love eating yogurt but even though I read the directions and did everything the way I was supposed to I cannot get it to taste very good. I received this product for my honest and unbiased review.

This one is intriguing. Not much "yogurty" flavor so it would be good for those who don't like yogurt. The page did say it was "mild" and that's an accurate description.

I've done only one batch so far. I ended up having to help it along with the addition of 2 tsp of gelatin Great Lakes Unflavored Beef Gelatin, Kosher, 16 Ounce Can. But one has to be judicious with regard to the amount of gelatin or you'll end up with something that looks like white jello. Soo...there's a learning curve to "fixing" thin yogurt w/ gelatin, but I'm getting there. I realize many folks would find this... Read more
