After awhile of reviewing multiple products from the same manufacturers, you get used to their packaging style and unboxing experience becomes rather predictable. Upon discovery of a new product brand, you get a hope for something different, and iBasso doesn't disappoint. Once you remove the outer sleeve, the main box opens up along the diagonal split on a side, in a setting reminiscent of a designer watch display. I know some people don’t care as much about unboxing, but I always appreciate it because of the time and the effort spent by manufacturer to make their product enjoyable from the moment you get that box into your hands. In my personal opinion, iBasso created a very elegant box setting with a practical storage and display functionality.
Once you remove the top portion where DX80 resides in a secure foam cutout, you get an accessories box in a shape of a wedge and the rest of the goodies inside of it.
The iBasso DX80 is a solid music player. The sound can be custom changed through the equalizer. I have used it for some hours since I received it and I am impressed at the solid and exact rendering of instruments and vocals. Using decent headphones such as the Beyerdynamic Custom One Plus, the sound is delivered with incredible tones and depth. The music has plenty of information where all instruments and vocals are clearly produced in a clear and pleasant manner. I have used it connected to the stereo of my car with a smile the fullness of the music. In one hour of use at a volume level above 100 and only using the screen to change to the next album, the battery level went down 7% out of 100%. It appears that a fully charged battery has the capacity to last a bit more than 14 hours however depending on screen use, the number of times the buttons are pressed and volume control changes one can safely say that a full charge can last more than 12 hours--I mainly listen to 44.1 KHZ...
The DX80 is a worthy successor (yes successor) to the DX90.
Pros: - An energetic/dynamic presentation - Excellent detail reproduction and instrument separation and layering - An intimate presentation with decent soundstage - A great companion for headphones with a more polite or laid back presentation
Cons: - A proprietary battery not easily replaced by the user. - A very new unit at this time, firmware is evolving...make sure to use has firmware 1.1.4 or newer or you may experience problems.
