Other well-known aircraft by North American Aviation include the AT-6 Texan trainer, the B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, as well as the F-86 Sabre and F-100 Super Sabre jet fighters. -American pilot Lt Col John D. Landers is credited with 14.5 aerial victories and the destruction of 20 enemy aircraft on the ground. -The Mustang truly became a success when it was fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12, built under license in the US by Packard as the V-1650. Approximately 8,000 of the 'D'-type P-51 Mustang were produced from 1944. -The Mustang's maximum range was 3,300 km (2,050 miles) with external tanks, more than any other Allied single-engine fighter by far. -The North American P-51 Mustang was the first production aircraft designed with laminar flow wings. These airfoils generated particularly low aerodynamic drag.
