I don't know how this thing got over 4 stars.
The keys are very hard to press down. I compared the keys to three other midi controllers that I own, and the keys on the AK490 were FAR more difficult to press down. It literally made my hands hurt to try to play it.
The build quality is pretty crappy too. It's very light and plastic feeling, especially the mod and pitch wheel. Personally, I think the fonts that they used for the text are hideous, but that's all cosmetic. I don't like the look/feel of the octave buttons either. The whole thing is just a cheap, ugly toy.
I guess that for the price it's passable, but not for me. I got it today and it's immediately going back. This will be the last time I ever buy a keyboard on the internet. Some things you just have to try before you buy.
Let's be clear: This product is extremely cheap for what it offers. In terms of being a good deal, it certainly passes. 49 keys for the price is excellent, plus it has old fashioned midi-out, usb-midi out, velocity sensitivity, and it can be powered from just the usb. That's really pretty good. Plus it's quite light! But the main downside for this midi controller is are the keys themselves. They are crazy stiff. Like, in order to hit remotely high velocity I practically have to jump and use my body weight to push down on the keys. The playing feel as a whole is sticky and very, very resistant. Even with playing it like a kangaroo, they velocity will still show up as pretty low on the computer, meaning that the plugin or instrument you are using will read like your playing very, very soft. You can jack up the volume, but the sound in most plugins will still be different than the velocity you're trying to play. So overall, good for a practice for kids or maybe a super cheap portable...
I gotta say, I got this in yesterday and it was probably the easiest USB device I ever set up on my computer. Literally plug and play. I use MAGIX software for my music productions and needed a good midi controller to help with writing and recording. The keys feel pretty close to an actual piano. And with the software I have, it picks up the sensitivity of how you strike the keys very well. I'm impressed how I didn't need to change anything to get it to pick it up with no latency at all.
