Paris was a thoroughly modern city in the late 19th century and had a reputation as the world capital of loose morals. In Offenbachs operetta, a Swedish baron and his wife fall into the trap of a local roué and con man. This racy satire of a piece has delighted audiences since its premiere, thanks to Offenbachs lively score and the witty libretto (sung here in the German version commissioned by the composer himself). This recording includes well-known soloists such as Anneliese Rothenberger and Marko Bakker.
