'The tall, blonde woman leaned in over my shoulder and whispered into my ear.
"This is the opportunity of a lifetime, Janet. Go in there, show him who you are and donâ€™t take no for an answer."
Valerie, the tall blonde in question, drew back far enough to wink, then put an encouraging hand on my shoulder. She was kind as well as beautiful, and how I envied her. Only 29 years old and already she was the head of Human Resources for Edge Capital Management, one of the most successful hedgefund and venture capital firms on Wall Street.

The girls around me were in shock at the news. I was only a little older than most of them, but those few years counted for a lot in this environment and not in a good way. What Valerie had offered me was an opportunity which most of them would have killed for.
I ignored the open mouths and gaping stares and stood up to make my way to his office. Like all of them I knew where it was but had never been inside.
"They say the first one is the worst," a girl by name of Kelly whispered loudly at me.
"The first what?" I said.
"The first blow job," she said, with deadpan seriousness. The color drained out of my face while the tight little group of frenemies descended into hushed laughter.
I began walking away. I didnâ€™t have time for them and I needed to focus. This was something I definitely wanted but it had been sprung on me out of the blue. I wasn't prepared and I felt my chest tighten, my palms moisten with anxiety.
I did not want to blow this.
"I think she actually believes me," Kelly whispered loudly to her little clique.
"I think she actually would," another added.
"I know I would," Kelly said.
By the time I got to his office, my heart was pounding in the back of my throat. To say that Evan Daniels was legendary in the company was something of an understatement. The women in my division spent half their working day talking about him, spotting him, making lewd jokes about what they would do to him if they got the chance.
But his good looks and reputation weren't the reason I was so nervous.
I figured I could handle all of that easily enough, but what Valerie had whispered to me had left me on edge. This was the opportunity I had been looking for when I first applied for a position in the company, and if he liked me then my career as a PA would be set forever.
