Additional Information

In the bestselling tradition of Restaurant Man and Setting the Table, Front of the House is a revealing and wryly humorous behind-the-scenes look at the gracious art of great restaurant service.

Great restaurant service is a gracious art that's been studied, practiced and polished by Jeff Benjamin, two-time James Beard Award nominee and managing partner of Philadelphia's acclaimed Vetri family of restaurants. Sagacious and observant, he beckons us behind the scenes for an insider's look at reserving a table, what your server thinks of you, what it takes to get ejected from a fine restaurant and a host of other revelations.

I heard an interview with the author on the radio and was immediately intrigued since I have always been interested in the restaurant business and wondered about it's inter workings.
What a great read! It answered all of my questions and gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding of what goes into a dining experience be it casual or fine dining.
This book covers a wide range of topics that I think would be of interest and helpful to a wide range of readers and as a result, I ordered four copies.
One for myself.
One for my Daughter In-Law who is a great cook and who has enjoyed a wide range of restaurants from casual to the finest of fine.
One for a young friend who is just getting started in the business and...
One for another friend who is a GM at a great new restaurant here in Orlando.
I'm looking forward to the feedback I get as a result of the three copies I gifted. Should be three different perspectives and I'm sure everyone will... Read more
I greatly enjoyed this book on the hospitality industry and appreciated the insights from a master. I love the Vetri restaurants (the food is sublime), but don't get to them often and never spend a lot when I go - but I am always treated like a treasured guest. Jeff Benjamin's team makes it all look effortless, and this book explains the ways the Vetri Family welcomes its guests and creates customers for life. Front of the House is divided into a series of highly readable commentaries with Jeff's thoughts on topics from tipping to electronic reservations.
Along the lines of Kitchen Confidential but not as entertaining. However, having been in the service business myself and having had relatives in the business as well, it was an interesting read. It was also informative; it gave me a lot of insight about the business and I will be more careful in the future about canceling a reservation and not getting cranky when we can't be seated at what looks like an empty (or near-empty) restaurant.
