- Hoosier Hill Farm Malic Acid Powder is a naturally occurring organic compound that is most commonly found in fruits like apples. Our food-grade malic acid powder is a natural food additive with a sharp, sour flavor. Its tart taste is perfect for a variety of recipes including adding sour flavor to candy or vinegar flavor to potato chips, french fries, and other savory snack foods. This versatile powder can also be used in winemaking.
- How to Use Malic Acid Powder: To make a sour coating for homemade gummy candies, mix 2-3 tablespoons of powder into 1 cup of granulated sugar.
- To make an easy salt and vinegar seasoning, combine 1-2 teaspoons of malic acid with 5 teaspoons of salt. Sprinkle on potato chips, french fries, or other savory snacks.
- In winemaking, malic acid is excellent for making precise pH adjustments. Substitute malic acid for tartaric acid when making Gewurztraminer, Muscat, and Reisling wines. This will lower the pH to produce a beverage that is a bit less than sour. Please note: do not add malic acid to any wine that will undergo malolactic fermentation.

The most common use of malic acid is in food products, notably in candy and potato chips. - Sour candies often use it rather than its sweeter cousin, citric acid, as the sourness is more intense. - Salt and vinegar flavored potato chips also use it to produce a tart, vinegar-like flavor. - For wine making - Malic Acid lowers pH a bit less than Tartaric acid, and is less sour. Excellent for making acid adjustments in Gewurztraminer, Muscat, and Reisling wines when Tartaric acid is not appropriate. You do not want to add malic acid to any wine that will undergo a malolactic fermentation, as roughly half of the added malic acid will not convert to lactic acid during a malolactic fermentation.
