Every woman who has ever fantasized about driving past her exit on the highway instead of going home to make dinner, and every woman who has ever dreamed of boarding a train to a place where no one needs constant attention--meet Maribeth Klein. A harried working mother who’s so busy taking care of her husband and twins, she doesn’t even realize she’s had a heart attack.
Surprised to discover that her recuperation seems to be an imposition on those who rely on her, Maribeth does the unthinkable: she packs a bag and leaves. But, as is often the case, once we get where we’re going we see our lives from a different perspective. Far from the demands of family and career and with the help of liberating new friendships, Maribeth is able to own up to secrets she has been keeping from herself and those she loves.
With bighearted characters--husbands, wives, friends, and lovers--who stumble and trip, grow and forgive, Leave Me is about facing the fears we’re all running from. Gayle Forman is a dazzling observer of human nature. She has written an irresistible novel that confronts the ambivalence of modern motherhood head on and asks, what happens when a grown woman runs away from home?

We all get overwhelmed at times. Want to pick up and check out of life. Some people day dream about it. The central character in Gayle Forman’s LEAVE ME does it for real. The protagonist is overwhelmed to say the least. She works a full-time job, while managing her twins’ schedules, her husband also works but seems to have no clue about what she is dealing with, as he isn’t paying much attention to the day-to-day. She literally has a heart attack and doesn’t know it and plows through it until at a doctor’s appointment that afternoon, mind you, after she has taken her kids to school, walked blocks to both school and the appointment, among other things, and her doctor sends her straight to the ER. After a routine procedure, something goes wrong and another major surgery takes place. She has yet to reach her husband because he never answers his phone. Needless to say, she is freaking out and has had, oh yes, a heart attack and she is only...
I feel like the blurb to this novel is very misleading and that a lot of readers will not understand what is going on under the surface of the character of Maribeth. In the beginning Maribeth is an overworked mother of twin four years olds whose husband is very distant and helps with little to nothing. I understand this struggle as I have a stay at home husband with three children and he helps little to none as well. It is very difficult as a woman to have a career and to be good at it while also being there for your family and being good to them too. There is many a night I come home and my two year old is mad at me but I was at work to finish one more project so that I can advance myself and provide just a bit more for them. I have fantasized about doing just what Maribeth does, packing a back and leaving with just a note on the table.
While being so busy and rushed Maribeth has a heart attack and doesn't even realize it. She ends up having a double bypass surgery and...
