Paris, April 1999: Aimée Leduc has her work cut out for her—running her detective agency and fighting off sleep deprivation as she tries to be a good single mother to her new bébé. The last thing she has time for now is to take on a personal investigation for a poor manouche (Gypsy) boy. But he insists his dying mother has an important secret she needs to tell Aimée, something to do with Aimée’s father’s unsolved murder a decade ago. How can she say no?
The dying woman’s secret is even more dangerous than her son realized. When Aimée arrives at the hospital, the boy’s mother has disappeared. She was far too sick to leave on her own—she must have been abducted. What does she know that’s so important it’s worth killing for? And will Aimée be able to find her before it’s too late and the medication keeping her alive runs out?

I wanted to love this book. I saw the author at a book-signing. Her discussion was so engaging and delightful that I went right home and ordered the kindle book. I was so disappointed that I almost quit reading after the first chapter. I did finish the book, but out of a sense of seeing it through. Sadly, I was never on the edge of my seat, unable to wait to see what happened next, and I found much of the content intrusive to the story line. I was not charmed by Aimee's new motherhood. I found the constant references to labels (on and on - Mont Blanc pen, Dior dress, a Gucci stroller, really?) incredibly tiresome. Mystery authors usually interweave elements of personal backstories deftly, but this just felt vapid.
My caveat: this was my first book from this series. Perhaps it's a one-off. Or perhaps I just don't care for the series. I probably won't spend the time or money to read another and find out.
I have read all her books. I was excited for this one to come out and pre-ordered it. I was so disappointed. She covers the same ground AGAIN. I am so tired of Aimee and her father...she has drug this storyline around since book one and it is worn out....get over it and move on, and yes I have lost a parent, in fact 2 in 14 months, so I know what it is like, but really move on. And the back story of her baby and baby's father...ugh....just hated this book and probably will not purchase her next one. Sorry.
I am a long-time fan, and if I weren't, I would have had trouble with this entry in the series. The action is propelled by Aimee's obsession with the unsolved murder of her father, which is a theme that runs through the series. Even with that background, though, I found this story a little over the top in terms of believability. Aimee has a 6 month old daughter, and yet refuses to stop pursuing a lead (weak as it is) to the murder of her father, despite the growing pile of bodies. Is anyone that stupid? She pursues her lead even at the cost of missing her first appointment with a lawyer whose help is necessary to her retaining custody of her daughter. I wanted to scream at her. My final quibble is that, looking back from the ending, I had trouble believing that the "bad guys" needed to or would have reacted as they did. But the journey was nevertheless enjoyable.
