A Boston Globe best book of 2016

In Zimbabwe's capital, a gun left in a taxi brings together five marriages in this intricate and tightly plotted novel.

This is the story of five marriages and one gun.

A British couple wonders at the unknowable city beyond their guarded compound while they build walls between themselves.

An American suspects his new home is having an insidious effect on his 'African queen' and their young daughter.

An enthusiastic young intellectual follows his wife to the city and finds only disillusion.

An Intelligence Officer loses a crucial piece of evidence. It will cost him his marriage, his girlfriend, and maybe his life.

An impoverished taxi driver and his wife find a gun in the cab. From this point on, all their lives are tied to the trigger.

In this tender and brutal portrait of Zimbabwe, the betrayals and conspiracies of the corrupt world are nothing compared to those of marriage.

The Death of Rex Nhongo is framed as a thriller, but its primary value (at least to me) is the intimate portrait it paints of Zimbabwe today.

The setting: Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare

Zimbabwe, as you are probably well aware, is a large nation that lies along the northern border of South Africa. It’s also one of the most poverty-stricken countries on earth despite its abundant natural resources. For decades, the country has been ruled by Robert Mugabe, who led its independence movement from the UK. Now 92 years old, Mugabe is rumored to remain as president only to camouflage the corruption and brutality of his colleagues. Many observers consider the regime a “thugocracy.” And that is the picture that emerges in high relief in this novel.

The plot: complex and full of surprises

A complex plot lies at the heart of The Death of Rex Nhongo. The complement of principal characters includes two expatriate families, one... Read more
The death of Rex Nhongo has little to do with the novel save to provide a possible murder weapon and to remind us of the most corrupt political regime on the planet. In this fast-paced story, lives of the main characters intertwine skillfully. This book is notable for the philosophy, psychology, and ethical choices of its well-drawn characters and the complexity of relationships, particularly marital relationships. Set against a backdrop of modern Zimbabwe with its crushing poverty in the midst of natural riches, its street gangs, its gold smugglers, its crippling government, and its currency inflation, to name a few problems, each character's personal issues are set in high relief. The foreigners can escape back home, but the citizens of Zimbabwe are left to cope--or not. The most intriguing character is a young girl who may be possessed or schizophrenic, but is more likely using her evil imaginary playmate as a novel coping mechanism. The author, whoever C.B. George is,... Read more
This transnational thriller has strong characters. Some are likable and most are not, but that is part of the fun. The title character, mostly absent in the novel, is the center of a ball of yarn in which characters' lives overlap and spin upside down. A smart book. I can't stop thinking about it.
