PRETTY THINGS / GET THE PICTURE Featuring the hoarse vocals of Mick Jagger-lookalike Phil May and the stinging leads of guitarist Dick Taylor (who actually played in early versions of the Rolling Stones), The Pretty Things' first two albums (both released in 1965) remain the group's most exciting and influential efforts that, quite frankly, make the early Stones sound positively pedestrian and genteel by comparison! Here they are together on a single CD that includes the Pretties' first-rate original hits (Rainin' in My Heart; Honey I Need and Don't Bring Me Down, later covered by David Bowie on his Pin Ups album) plus ripping takes on numbers by Bo Diddley (Roadrunner; Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut, and She's Fine, She's Mine) and Willie Dixon (Big Boss Man)! Double CD, the first two Pretty Things' albums. The Pretty Things (1965) - Get the Picture? (1965)

This 2 cd set contains the first two albums by a largely unknown or forgotten British rock group known as The Pretty Things. Those albums were originally released back in the mid 60s, when The Pretty Things had a "garage band" sound. They sound a little like early Yardbirds or Stones, except that there is a harder edge to these songs. It's outrageous that this band never rec'd any real airplay in the US. They were very original and their first several albums are must-haves for any serious rock fan.
I would recommend getting this set instead of buying the discs separately. It's a nice attractive package and the sound is great, not muddy or muffled. For some reason they decided to put the band's second album cover on the front, with the first album cover on the back. I guess they thought the "Get the Picture?" album cover looked more attractive?
At any rate if you like mid-60s garage rock you'll definitely dig this.
After chatting with quite a few folks on the discussion boards' section, I decided to dig a little deep and check out one of early rock's forgotten bands from the 60's. Boy, am I glad I did as this collection represents a band whom got overlooked within the time period of the British invasion and I had forgotten about guitarist Dick Taylor, whom was involved in the earliest version of the Rolling Stones(although I don't think they were known as such, yet). Phil May is a great singer and reminds me a little of Keith Relf from the Yardbirds, whom shared a similar style within British Rock, yet became more revered because of 3 major guitarists that emerged in Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck within different configurations. The debut disc shows a band that has a gritty attitude, mixes blues with a harder edged rock sound that is not unlike the Rolling Stones and the Kinks; tracks like Roadrunner, Big City, Honey I Need, She's Fine, She's Mine and Don't Lie to Me display the overure...
This is a double CD, and consists of the first and second Pretty Things records. It's a solid R&B grungefest! Fans of the early Pretty Things will not be disappointed, no sir.
Guitarist Dick Taylor, who was in an early version of the Rolling Stones, and vocalist Phil May are still fronting the Pretty Things today. And fans of the Mekons will also remember Taylor from several versions of that band.
Old? You bet! A solid groove and money-maker shaker? ABSOLUTELY!
